installing EMIS Web on your home computer
Because EMIS Web is web-based, accessing it from home does not have to mean clunky remote desktop access. Instead you can install EMIS Web on your home PC and load it in the same way you would with any other application on your home computer.
EMIS Web only works over a secure encrypted N3 connection. You will need to install a VPN (Virtual Private Network) application and have a username and password to your local NHS (N3) network in order to run EMIS Web. "Cisco VPN client" is the most common application to do this. It can be provided by your CCG in some areas, or you may need to purchase a VPN from a 3rd party like Egton.
You will need to download the EMIS Web application on to a memory stick from a computer which already has EMIS Web installed. Follow these instructions to do this:
EMIS Web and OS X
If you are using a Macbook or iMac then you can still use EMIS Web but you will need to either use BootCamp or purchase Parallels Desktop in order to do so. QMasters recommends Parallels Desktop as it allows users to run EMIS Web directly on the OS X desktop - this works really well and means you haven't got to reboot your computer each time you want to run EMIS Web.
You may be able to access EPS (electronic prescribing) and Choose & Book when using EMIS Web remotely. This depends on how your VPN is configured locally. You will need to ask your CCG for the smartcard software and buy a smartcard reader (£10-£15 on amazon).
